Freeze etch electron micrograph of a clathrin lattice assembled at a membrane reveals the regular geometry of clathrin coats. Note the invaginating coated pit deforming the membrane en route to budding off a vesicle. The inset shows the clathrin triskelion, which consists of three heavy chains and three light chains that assemble into lattices.
