An original drawing by Camillo Golgi of the “internal reticular apparatus.” This fundamental discovery of cell biology, namely intracellular membrane compartments, was first made in neurons, including here a Purkinje neuron of the cerebellum. Since then, our knowledge of neuronal membrane compartments has lagged well behind that obtained in model eukaryotic cells. See C. Golgi, Boll. Soc. Med. Chir. Pavia, 1898.
