Melissa manages the operations of Neurobiology, including finances, personnel, facilities, grants, human resources, and general administration. She is also the Neurobiology Diversity & Inclusion Leader, the lead of the Neurobiology Diversity and Inclusion Committee, an active member of the School of Medicine Diversity and Inclusion Council, and a co-founder and co-organizer of the DIBS Inclusion and Power Dynamics Series. She has facilitated myriad sessions across Duke on topics such as micro-aggressions, inclusion, white privilege, effective mentoring, honest communication, and ally training for diverse groups of faculty, staff, and trainees. Melissa started her career in social work and has served in the fields of women’s health, teen parenting, adolescent foster care, geriatrics, and substance use disorders. Over the years, she has provided individual, couples, and family counseling; facilitated a variety of support and educational groups; and implemented professional development and training. More recently, she has worked in administration, helping establish and build new initiatives and educational programs in addition to managing daily operations, finances, and human resources. Before coming to Neurobiology, she served as the Executive Director of a local non-profit and then as Associate Director of a new Duke Initiative. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Duke University and her Master of Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania.
