Neurobiology's own Rich Mooney has just been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, considered to be one of the highest honors a scientist can receive. There is no membership application process as membership is achieved only by being nominated by current Academy members. Nominees are carefully vetted culminating in a final ballot by members at the Academy's annual meeting in April every year. A maximum of 120 members can be elected annually.
